The Last Good-Bye

The gunfire fades in the background. The crackling of the burning tires around him fades as his eye lids are slowly betraying him. All he can make out now is the flickering of that same fire. As he lays there, in that ditch, clutching his rifle to his chest. He's surrounded by the cold desert, his thoughts lead him into the dark.
His eyes close, just for that second, he imagines her voice waking him up in the middle of the night. He remembers it clearly, the digital clock beaming its green light to his face. 4:15am, January 23rd 2003. It was a beautiful night in the suburbs of Albany, NY. The early morning drizzle tapping against the window of the bedroom. She kisses his forehead and pulls his hand and leads him to the shower. She closes the door as he turns on the water. The warm stream emits steam into the Pine Fresh smelling bathroom. He runs his hand across his new hair cut. Well, whatever is left of the hair he once had.
He put his uniform on, then picked his duffle bag from the corner. As he steps out of the room, he sees her in the doorway down the hall. He walks over and holds her tightly around her waist as they look down onto their beautiful blonde 3 year old daughter. She's hugging Mr. Tinkleberry with just the cutest smile drawn across her face. "She must be dreaming of the pink unicorn again," he thinks to himself.
She kisses him on the porch as that dark green bus pulls up just ahead of their driveway. She puts her hand to his cheek, he kisses it lightly. She tries to mutter a word, he shushes her and smiles. "Save it for when I'm back." She holds back her tear.
He's shaken abruptly at the sound of a deafening explosion. His eyes are wide open by the time the dirt flies to his face. His body slumps over, he starts to feel cold. His eyes are shut again. The image of her slowly fades away in his mind. He's going away for good.
